If you’ve been considering buying a robot vacuum cleaner but you don’t have a lot of flooring in your home to clean, there’s probably no need to spend hundreds of dollars on the top of the line model. Sure, these vacuums will do a great job of cleaning your house – it’s just that they’re overkill for your needs. If this describes your situation you’d do just as well to look for an affordable option and there are quite a few good choices on the market today.

Perhaps the most affordable robot vacuum cleaner available these days is the Dirt Devil RoomMate Robotic Hard Floor Vacuum. This model has many of the benefits of those expensive robot vacuum cleaners and yet it’s priced at under $60. Essentially, if you can give up that extra afternoon coffee for a few weeks you can put together the money to purchase this vacuum cleaner.

Perfect for Hardwood Floors

If your home or apartment is covered predominantly with hardwood or laminate flooring this Dirt Devil model will be more than adequate for your needs. It’s very low profile so it can get into most areas with ease – even under your couches and chairs, and it can easily fit through tight areas. That means you don’t have to worry about moving furniture out of the way in order to vacuum as you would with a traditional vacuum cleaner.

Adequate Run Time

Some of the best robot vacuum cleaners will run for anywhere between 90 and 120 minutes – you won’t get that kind of run time with the RoomMate, but it will last for about 50 minutes, which is fine if you don’t have a lot of floor space. A good friend of mine is looking for a good robot vacuum cleaner and he lives in a bachelor apartment so this machine would be perfect for his needs. If on the other hand you live in a 2000 ft. home you probably won’t be too satisfied with the battery power of this particular model. Whether this machine is suitable or not really depends on your particular situation.

Peace and Quiet

There’s nothing more irritating than trying to work on a project in the home office and your spouse is busily vacuuming around you. Most traditional vacuum cleaners are extremely noisy and very distracting, but not this model. The Dirt Devil Roommate is one of the quietest robot vacuums on the market and it’s considerably quieter than any traditional vacuum cleaner. That means you can sit in the corner office and watch it clean quietly while you work on that big project for the next day’s meeting.

Gets into the Corners

Another great feature of this vacuum cleaner is that it has dual edge cleaning bristles which are ideal for cleaning in those hard to reach corners. The brush actually protrudes out about an inch or so from the machine and continuously spins, pushing the dirt out of the corners and into the vacuum suction underneath the machine. It’s an innovative design that works very well; because there are no rotating bristles it’s not likely to get caught up in any wires that accidentally get in the machine’s way.

Protects from Falls

I’m lucky enough to live near one of the modern wonders of the world – Niagara Falls; while this vacuum cleaner wouldn’t handle going over the edge of that great cataract, it wouldn’t have to because it has built-in cliff protection technology. That means when it approaches the edge of stairs and other ledges it automatically senses the danger and moves away. This is a common feature of robot vacuum cleaners, but it’s an important one nonetheless.

It’s Not Afraid of the Dark

One of the biggest problems with using a traditional vacuum cleaner is that they’re generally pretty heavy and they don’t do a very good job of getting under couches and chairs because they are too bulky. This model by Dirt Devil is much better at getting underneath couches and chairs because of its compact design and very low profile. All you have to do is set it in motion; it will easily remove the dust and dirt under your furniture that you may not have been able to reach before.

It Talks to You

This machine also has the ability to talk to you and let you know when it needs to be charged – okay, not really, but it does have indicator lights on the top of it that will let you know when it’s time to charge it. When you have a full charge the light will turn green and when you’re approaching the time you need to charge the machine, it will turn red. There’s also another indicator light that lets you know when the dustbin is nearly full so that you can change it.

Where It Falls Short

As you might expect with an inexpensive robot vacuum cleaner like this there are some things you might be a little concerned about. For one thing, it simply is not designed to work on carpets – it’s for hardwood floors and that’s about it. It’s also quite slow, so if you have a very large room you may have to recharge it a couple of times to complete all of your floors; when you consider that it takes about 4 hours for a full charge, this may seem a little tedious. On top of that you actually have to plug it in yourself, so you can’t really leave this machine unattended and let it do the work for you without supervision.

A Good Bargain for the Money

The Dirt Devil Roommate hardwood floor vacuum robot is not perfect by any means, but it does a pretty good job on hardwood floors. If you live in an apartment or a small home, it’s ideal for that and will probably suit your needs. If on the other hand you have a large home, or your home is mostly carpet, this particular vacuum is not the one for you.
